Why San Rafael solar economics work
San Rafael spans more diverse property types than any other Marin city — Spanish-style downtown commercial, ranch homes in Terra Linda, mid-century houses in Sun Valley, modern hillside homes in Glenwood and Bret Harte, and an established commercial corridor along Lincoln Avenue. Each property type has a different solar profile, and our designs reflect that. Average residential PG&E rate exposure here is 30–45¢/kWh; commercial demand charges run materially higher on PG&E E-19 tariffs.
- Diverse roof stock. San Rafael has more varied roof orientations and ages than Sausalito or Mill Valley. We engineer each project for its specific roof — not from a one-size template.
- Strong commercial opportunities. Downtown San Rafael, Northgate, and the Smith Ranch commercial corridors have many multi-tenant properties where the Monetize Rooftop model (see PAG case study) is a strong fit.
- City building department. San Rafael's permit counter is one of the more responsive in the county. Typical permit issuance: 2–5 weeks from submittal for residential.
What we install in San Rafael
Residential Solar + Storage
Sized for your home, your tariff, and your backup needs. Terra Linda single-stories, hillside multi-stories — different designs, same engineering.
Commercial Rooftop
Downtown commercial, multi-tenant properties along Lincoln Ave and Northgate. PPAs, leases, direct ownership — all modeled before commitment.
EV Charging
Workplace charging for commercial properties, Level 2 home charging for residential. Sized around your solar output and TOU schedule.
Microgrids
Estate properties in Glenwood and Sleepy Hollow needing multi-day backup and full off-grid capability during PSPS events.

Common San Rafael questions
Do San Rafael homes need battery storage under NEM 3.0?
For residential systems installed today, yes — strongly. NEM 3.0 export credits are 75% lower than NEM 2.0, so a solar-only system gives most of its production to PG&E for pennies. Battery storage captures the difference by serving evening loads from stored solar. Real residential IRR for solar + storage in Marin in 2026 is 8–14% — better than nearly any passive investment.
Does San Rafael have PSPS exposure?
Yes — hillside neighborhoods especially. Glenwood, Sun Valley, and Bret Harte sit in fire-weather zones that PG&E can de-energize during high-wind, low-humidity events. A battery system rated for whole-home backup keeps the lights on during these events; otherwise the grid simply goes off for the duration.
What's the typical install timeline?
Residential: 8–14 weeks signed contract to PTO. Commercial: 4–9 months depending on system size and utility interconnection load. We file Rule 21 interconnection applications early to protect the timeline.
