Why Marin is an above-average solar market
Marin County has three structural features that make solar economics work better here than the California average. First, residential PG&E rates run 30–45¢/kWh — among the highest in the state — which improves payback math. Second, MCE (Marin Clean Energy, the local Community Choice Aggregator) offers an additional rebate program for new solar+storage installations. Third, Marin's property values reward visible sustainability infrastructure — Zillow studies put the solar premium at 4.1% nationally, but Marin's premium is consistently higher because the buyer pool actively seeks it.
- PSPS exposure is real. Hillside neighborhoods across Marin sit in fire-weather zones that PG&E can de-energize during high-wind events. Battery storage is the difference between staying in your home during these events and not.
- MCE incentives stack with federal ITC. The 30% federal Investment Tax Credit applies to most Marin systems, and MCE's local rebate program for new systems can add additional savings on top.
- Permit timelines vary by jurisdiction. Sausalito and San Rafael typically issue residential solar permits in 2–4 weeks. Mill Valley and Tiburon are sometimes a week or two longer. We file early and stay in front of inspectors.

Common Marin questions
Do MCE customers benefit from solar differently than PG&E customers?
Most Marin homes get generation from MCE and delivery from PG&E. Solar economics are excellent under either structure — but the modeling accounts for both. We run the math for your specific tariff and rate plan before quoting.
Does Marin's fog affect solar production materially?
Less than people assume. Average annual irradiance across Marin is ~1,450 kWh/kW/year — within ~7% of sunnier Bay Area markets and well within the band where solar economics work. The afternoon clearing pattern actually aligns favorably with peak production windows.
Are we eligible for MCE solar+storage incentives?
If you're an MCE customer (most Marin residents are), yes — typically. The specific incentive structure changes year to year. We track current programs and roll the right ones into your project economics during evaluation.
